For the past three years, this blog has been silent. I haven’t stopped thinking about Detroit. I’ve just been too busy to write. In the fall of 2011, I began a joint masters and PhD program in urban and regional planning at the University of Michigan. Overwhelmed by the work, I took an unannounced hiatus from blogging, knowing I needed all the time I had and more to keep up with my classes and reconcile the rush of new ideas and perspectives I was encountering.
Now my coursework is complete and I’m officially a Master of Urban Planning. I’m also a Ph.D. candidate, which means I’m preparing to write my dissertation. While no less busy, I think this is an ideal moment to start blogging again. I’ve always respected writers and scholars who not only write for a public audience but also learn in public, letting others witness and influence the evolution of their thinking (Ta-Nehisi Coates comes to mind). In that spirit, I will soon be blogging under my own name at http://patrickcoopermccann.com/, where I’ll be sharing my thoughts on Detroit and cities like it as I research and write my dissertation. I’ll also keep tweeting as @rethinkdetroit, sharing the most interesting stories and links I find each day.
Thanks for reading, and I hope you’ll follow me to my new blog.
